In a bid to counter misinformation and historical distortion surrounding Philippine history, the SINAG Society of Leaders (SISOL) organized a seminar titled “PINAS: Pagbabahagi ng Ideya at Natatanging Aksyon sa Sangkapuluan” at the Senior High School Multi-Purpose Hall on September 15, 1:00-5:00 PM.
The event aims to promote patriotism and inspire Lasallian student leaders to strengthen their appreciation and awareness of Philippine history.
Renowned speakers attended PINAS, including De La Salle University-Dasmariñas’ (DLSU-D) Cavite Studies Center director Dr. Jan Phillip Mallari, as well as Social Science Educator and Project Saysay’s Executive Director, Michael Anjielo Tabuyan.
Dr. Mallari’s discussion emphasized the need for critical thinking skills when navigating through historical accounts, especially in an era where misinformation proliferates.
When asked about the importance of history and media literacy, Mallari answered, ‘’Keep reading, [ang] history ay nakakatamad daw, ‘no, maybe you are looking at [a] different history. It is important to check sources.’’
Moreover, Michael Tabuyan’s discussion highlighted the role of education in dispelling historical myths and fostering a sense of national identity.
He also addressed how people tend to cherry-pick what they want to remember and forget about our history.
One of the event’s highlights was the mini quiz bee, which tested participants’ knowledge of Philippine history while establishing camaraderie and unity.
The timing of the event, coinciding with National Patriotism Month, also added an extra layer of significance in achieving the event’s goal to promote patriotism by strengthening students’ appreciation of Philippine history.
