Junior students majoring in Film at De La Salle University – Dasmarinas (DLSU-D) are now merged with their Film seniors to avoid the dissolution of their track.

“These adjustments are expected to create a ripple effect in the next semesters. For now, it is the best we can do to keep the course track classes, support the students and at the same time comply with the university policy on class sizes.”, Communication and Journalism Department (CJD) Chair Dr. Maria Nornelyn Cachuela said.

Due to the shortage in the number of enrollees, third-year film students will take up fourth-year subjects instead.

Third-year film students who enrolled in Film Criticism will be transferred to Film Production.

Moreover, they will also be taking up Film Management and Distribution instead of Screenwriting.

Aside from continuing the existence of the said track, the adjustments made are to prevent the students from paying additional charges for their enrolled subjects.

On Sept. 16, third-year Film student Junior Patrick Basco, who initiated the “#SaveFilmDLSUD” Twitter movement, along with other colleagues tweeted their expressed triumph about the continuation of their specialized track.

Basco tweeted his reaction over the decision stating, “We will continue, Film will move forward.”

It can be recalled that the dissolution of specific courses in DLSU-D has been occurring ever since the start of the pandemic, causing a decrease in enrollees.

In fact, under CJD, Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism has never been offered to students since last academic year because it did not meet the required class size.

However, despite the odds brought by the season, Cachuela emphasized that her office is one with the interest and passion in developing the skills of these future filmmakers.
