More than a week after the Information and Communication Technology Center (ICTC) announced in their released statement that they will be launching the “DLSU-D Konek” Wi-Fi system, a few De La Salle University – Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) college students quickly shared their thoughts and experience in utilizing the new Wi-Fi system.

The ICTC announced that they will start launching new Wi-Fi access points for all officially enrolled students beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Yet, it was already announced on the DLSU-D Senior High School official Facebook page that all students from senior high school were allowed to start logging in to their Wi-Fi accounts from Monday, Oct. 10.

In an interview with Green FM, Miguel Abenales (COM32) said that he thinks the new Wi-Fi system is efficient for students who prefer working outside the campus buildings.

“It’s actually a good initiative since madaming students ‘yung may need ng internet connection outside their building[s] lalo na’t maraming students ang pumapasok ngayon [sa onsite classes] and they want to do [their] tasks outside their [class]rooms,” Abenales explained.

The new Wi-Fi system can be accessed on various spots around the east and west campus including a few open areas and known hangout places for students like the JFH Kubo, Square Canteen, and CTH Kubo.

Ramoncito Alaras (COM41) also shared his appreciation for the new project as he recalled his experience accessing the university’s previous Wi-Fi system.

“I started using ‘yung DLSU-D Konek immediately last week… I found out [about it] sa Library (Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo) kasi nawala ‘yung connection sa Library…”

He continued, “Alam ko na naman na parang the internet was a really big struggle sa [DLSU-D]… so my expectation was really high noong sinabi sakin nung librarian na, ‘oh this is for everyone, magagamit niyo na [ang Wi-Fi] all around the campus.’”

Students’ feedback

Few college students shared their experiences as they accessed the new Wi-Fi system of the DLSU-D Konek for their onsite and online learning experience.

“I’ve already done several classes online through that (DLSU-D Konek) Wi-Fi connection. In my experience mabilis naman, even if I’m watching videos and nag-lo-load ako ng medyo heavy na websites,” Alaras explained.

On the other hand, Abenales said there were some instances where he experienced poor connectivity concerns, and there were also some cases when he needed to re-login to his account to successfully connect.

Nakaka-connect agad ako which is good, pero may instances na you need to re-login your account on DLSU-D Konek… and may mga dead spots,” The user mentioned that he experienced the issues upon accessing the Wi-Fi around the Gregoria Montoya Hall (GMH), Square Canteen, and sa College of Education building.

Moreover, *JD, an education student, mentioned his struggle with having weak connection which he encountered in the Ladislao Diwa Hall (LDH) building.

“Based sa experience ko kahapon parang nagbaba ‘yung latency ng [Wi-Fi] kaya hindi masyado tuloy-tuloy yung malakas na internet… mabagal minsan mag-load tsaka limited [kasi] hindi makapag-[social media], [only] search engines and Schoolbook.” The student stressed.

Students’ suggestions

When asked about the suggestions that the students can give for the DLSU-D Konek project, they were able to share their hopes to help improve their personal online experience in the university.

*JD shared his opinion over the stated restriction of the ICTC that they are only allowing one device per person to be connected to the said system.

Sa tingin ko dapat tanggalin ‘yun (limited device per person)… may mga scenario kasi na halimbawa ‘yung laptop or computer is work station [ng student], and then ‘yung cellphone [nila] is for contacting people lang,” the user explained.

However, *JD also expressed his understanding to why he thinks the limit exists, “Ang problema naman doon kaya siguro ginawa nilang ganon [‘yung limitation], para talaga lahat ng estudyante makagamit, kasi kung more than [one device] pa ang allowed [per person], hihina talaga ng sobra [‘yung connection].”

Abenales also mentioned his recommendation saying, “[The ICTC should] only improve the places na may dead spots. All in all, it’s good naman na.”

Furthermore, Alaras has a different concern about the dissemination of announcements regarding the new Wi-Fi system within the university.

“I guess my suggestion is for wider dissemination about dito sa effort na ‘to kasi not a lot of students [already] know about it… I really want to inform other students pa so they can really maximize [the usage].”
