La Salle Filipiniana Dance Company (LSFDC) hosted back-to-back online contests this month of December that highlight the value of love and support of the Filipino culture and the arts.

“Maharuyo: Modernong Pilipino” is a contest set to feature a modern take on the traditional Filipiniana dress, incorporating modern styles of clothing in the form of fashion photography.

On the other hand, “Adorno: Disenyong Pilipino,” aims to showcase the creativity and resourcefulness of Lasallian students by integrating Filipino ethnic designs in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as face masks and face shields.

The said online contests will be judged accordingly by a set of mechanics and criteria, with chosen winners getting the chance to win cash prizes up to Php 5,000.

In an exclusive interview with Green FM, project head Maria Theresa Lourdez Crescini, shared that the online events took inspiration from the group’s vision in promoting Filipino culture awareness.

Crescini explained how both words deem to embody the idea of the said projects, exhibiting the beauty of Filipino culture.

LSFDC titled uncommonly used Filipino words for their online events: “Maharuyo,” which means ‘to enchant,’ and “Adorno,” defined as ‘to decorate.’

She further emphasized the importance of these events as awareness at this time of the pandemic where students can showcase their skills and creativity, incorporating the current situation with culture and different forms of arts.

“We really want to conduct an event that will feature the creative side of our students… I think it’s important during these times,” she said.

Moreover, Crescini added that LSFDC envisions to continue creating more innovative and sustainable projects in the future, believing that one’s talent can never be stopped.

Submission of entries for “Marahuyo: Modernong Pilipino” is extended until today, December 9, while “Adorno: Disenyong Pilipino” ended yesterday, December 8.

The winners for both events will be announced on Friday, December 11.
