Marking its 8th-year celebration, PRISM 2022 highlighted the importance of the event itself and advised students about the creative challenges of graphic designing and filmmaking.
The event titled “PRISM 2022: A Journey through the Millenium” commenced its three-day exhibit and seminar from various speakers from December 5 to 7 at the Ugnayang La Salle in De La Salle University – Dasmarinas (DLSU-D).
During the first day, Digital Marketing Specialist and University alumna Friday Galvez underscored the essence of PRISM.
“The beauty of PRISM is we get something [that] we really wanted to do… PRISM is about you, not about papers, professors, [but] it’s about what you want as a designer,” she said.
Galvez emphasized that PRISM has opened doors of job opportunities to creative artists like her and quoted that art is about communication, “(PRISM) is about showcasing your talents and expressing yourselves… to be seen… Hindi lang siya [about] poster, exhibit, or event.”
As the highlight of the 2nd day of the PRISM event, Jarvie Madronero, a freelance designer and illustrator for 6 years and a professor at DLSU-D, shared her story and encouraging words with students.
Madronero displayed some of her most recent and older works, encouraging the students to never give up by stating that creative designs will continue to improve.
“Your journey as a designer has just started, give yourself time for growth and progress,” Madronero said as she looked back to her life in the past. She added that students need acceptance in order to continue.
She also added that “Your mentor is not your enemy” but students should learn to listen, think and absorb because all the comments they received were a push to ignite their passion.
“What if kaya mo pala, wala ka lang tiwala sa sarili mo?” Madronero said, as she motivates students to explore, work hard and not lose hope.
As an experienced freelance designer and artist, Madronero taught students to always be humble so that people will remain working with them because according to her, it is hard to maintain a client.
“Learn to educate, because one can’t do freelancing if they can’t communicate, ” she lectured, highlighting that students should not judge their clients and always stay professional.
She also stated that procrastination is not a friend and promoted time management for students to learn.
Madronero stressed to stop pleasing everyone, “Create art for yourself, not anyone else… always design with a purpose.”
Meanwhile, Gawad Urian Nominee for Best Director Carlos Catu discussed the value of storytelling in filmmaking through self.
“Tayong mga filmmaker, tayo ay may kwento. Ang nagbabago sa atin ay kwenta… ang mga kwenta sa kwento natin. It answers our why, bakit ginawa natin? May pinaghuhugutan ka,” Catu advised.
Moreover, he stressed that inspiration is not enough to produce film storytelling, “Gusto ko sabihin na pag working artist, hindi sapat ‘yung inspiration… Not everyday, you’re inspired… tinatrabaho natin ‘yung inspiration.”
He also mentioned that you should be the one seeking inspiration, “Ang pagiging isang filmmaker, hindi lang siya title. It’s hard work… pagtrabuhan mo ang inspirasyon.”
PRISM is an annual event supervised by fourth-year students of the Bachelor of Multimedia Arts at DLSU-D.
