Instead of answering why art is political, a Filipino graphic artist, hidden under a pseudonym, emphasized that art is crucial in a time when oppression and conquest persist.
During a webinar titled “Sining Pulitika & Zine of the Times” by the De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) Communication Program Council (CPC), “Malayo Pa Ang Umaga,” his ‘artist name’, said that art should be used not as a weapon but as “posporo” or a match.
“Para sa akin po, naniniwala ako na ‘yung sandata sa pagbabago at pagkilos na gusto natin ay tayo, ‘yung tao, ‘yung viewers at ‘yung readers. Hindi ‘yung mismong sining,” he stressed.
Malayo Pa Ang Umaga pointed out that art does not instantly change someone’s beliefs, but instead provides a “space and window” for people to think and to open new perspectives.
“Nagtatanim din ito (art) ng questions, ng duda sa mga kasalukuyang kinikilingan mo at pinaniniwalaan,” Malayo Pa Ang Umaga added.
The artist said that it is up to the audience what they will do about the things the artwork implanted to them.
“Sakali man(g) mapaso nga ng sining ang isang puso, madaling kakalat ang apoy,” he said.
As an example, Malayo Pa Ang Umaga used the ‘Tumindig’ artwork of cartoonist Kevin Raymundo, also known as “Tarantadong Kalbo” that became viral on social media and inspired many to join his cause.
Raymundo is also one of the speakers of the said virtual event.
According to CPC Chief Executive and project head Regina Llanillo, the webinar was influenced by several political artworks that “uplifted the spirits of Filipinos amid the pandemic.”
On the event’s implication on the Lasallian community, Llanillo said, “This will remind Lasallians to take a stand no matter what. To be brave enough to speak and resist injustice.”
The chief executive also added that it is not enough reason that people are stuck within their homes for them to just be silent on topics related to politics.
